Canadian Silver Maple

Canadian Silver Maples

The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf was first introduced in 1988. Issued annually by the RCM (Royal Canadian Mint), and backed as a sovereign coin of the Canadian government, the Silver Maple is acknowledged as one of the most beautiful, and recognizable, silver coins in the world. At 99.99% fineness, with one troy ounce silver content, the Canadian Silver Maple ranks among the finest official bullion coins in the world. The Silver Maple is legal tender in Canada with a nominal face value of $5 Canadian dollars.

Since its inception, the Silver Maple has featured an obverse with a profile of Queen Elizabeth II, and a reverse image depicting the Maple Leaf and the words CANADA, FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR and, on either side of the Maple Leaf, four 9s appear, denoting the purity of the silver.

Over the years, there have been three standard editions and several special editions, including the 25th Anniversary limited edition in 2013. The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf was originally packaged in Mylar sheets, with each one troy ounce coin individually encapsulated. However, due to increased demand, Maples have been packaged in semi-transparent tubes with a yellow lid bearing the RCM logo since 2009. Each RCM tube contains twenty five (25) one ounce coins. In 2014, new security features were introduced, including a micro-engraved laser mark and a light diffracting pattern of radial lines. These anti-counterfeiting measures make the coins significantly harder to duplicate while also enhancing their beauty.

The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf is designed with careful attention to every intricate detail. And while the basic features of the Canadian Silver Maple have remained the same since first being minted in 1988, the design has continued to evolve and keep up with the times, with changes that include proof releases, various privy marks, holographic enhancements, and commemorative variations.

The obverse features a portrait of a right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II. This design has changed twice since the original 1988–1989 portrait designed by Arnold Machin. From 1990–2003, the Queen’s portrait was depicted by Dora de Pédery-Hunt and since 2004, Elizabeth II has been lovingly captured by Susanna Blunt’s striking design. The obverse also denotes the year of issue and the coins $5 CAD face value.

On the reverse, we see a large, single maple leaf, an image so closely associated with Canadian nationalism and reflective of Canadian pride. Also shown are the weight and purity of this unique silver coin. New coins, when viewed under magnification, reveal a micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark and the number 15.
